FEATURED PROJECT: City of Gainesville Lift Station 21 Odor Evaluation

Webster Environmental Associates, Inc. (WEA) was retained by the Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) to conduct an odor evaluation in the collection system upstream from Lift Station 21 (LS 21).   GRU has experienced odor problems at LS 21 and within the upstream collection system.  The odor evaluation included odor sampling and testing, H2S testing,  wastewater testing, and sewer exhaust testing at numerous locations within the LS 21 collection system.  Pilot testing and evaluation of chemical injection alternatives for mitigating the odor problems was also completed.

The evaluation and report included identification of the primary causes of the odor problems and recommendations for odor mitigation both within the collection system and at the LS 21 site.  Preliminary capital and O&M cost estimates for the recommended odor mitigation systems were also provided.  Odor and H2S levels in the collection system were effectively mitigated during the pilot testing.  Based on this evaluation, GRU implemented the recommended odor control systems.  GRU retained WEA to complete the design of the odor control systems.

Final Project Scorecard

  • Odor sampling, testing and analysis identifies odor problem areas.
  • Pilot testing and evaluation of chemical injection alternatives
  • Odor and H2S levels were effectively mitigated during the pilot testing
  • GRU is implementing all recommended odor mitigation systems
